Hello,

I need someone with experience with Nissan's GA16DE engine. I own a 1994 Sentra XE five speed and when I start the car up or if the car is at certain RPM's I can hear the timing chain. I researched into it and the upper timing chain tensioner is the problem with this engine (especially for a twenty year old car). My question is how hard is the job? I know you have to remove the valve cover and timing cover and then unscrew the two bolts holding it (sounds easy but usually car repairs aren't) in but how hard is it? Thanks for any help in advance

1-10, 10 being the hardest. I would say a 7. Mainly because the drive belts and limited space and the t-belt having to be in time when you re-install it.

Timing chain wear happens some cars wear out the chain, tensioner and guide rails and sprockets. Rattle Whir buzzing and sometime a Cam shaft position sensor code will be the only way to know if the chain has to much slack in it. Modern 4 cam V-6 24 valve or V-8 32 valve engines may Have two or three chains. And lots of moving parts that have to be lubricated properly. Oil changes and air filters are key to long engine life. Dirty oil that has lost it's anti wear property's ruins motors.

I just hope you do not find out that you also have to replace the lower timing chain too. Most time the main chain rattles because the plastic tensioner rail breaks apart and falls into the oil pan. There is a new design metal rubber coated chain rail that needs new bolts. Most time I replace chains both tensioners rails and if the sprockets look worn I replace those too.
